TEMITOPE BALOGUN
BALOGUN TEMITOPEABIODUN, is a professor in the department of English and Literary Studies, formerly Language and Linguistics at the Osun State University, a position she assumed in 2018 and occupies till this day.
Before the commencement of her journey in the University system, she worked as a teacher in Nara Commercial Secondary School, located in Enugu in the Eastern part of Nigeria as part of her service to her country, Nigeria in the year 1992 to 1993. She began her career in the tertiary education scene as a Graduate Assistant in the department of English, Faculty of Arts, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, a position she so efficiently filled from 1995 to 1998. She went on to be an assistant lecturer in the same University from the year 1998 to 2002. Up the ladder she climbed as she served as Lecturer II and Lecturer I in the department of English, Faculty of Arts from 2002 to 2006 and 2006 to 2010 respectively in the same university, she has also served as Lecturer II at Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State from 2004 to 2005.
She has been an external examiner in the department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University in 2016 and 2017and in the University of Ibadan in 2018 and 2019. She has also served as assessor to professorial candidiates at LAUTECH and Lead City University. In 2011, she launched her career in Osun State University as Lecturer I at the Department of Languages and Linguistics Osun State University and occupied this position until 2012 when she was promoted to Senior Lecturer in the same department and university. In 2015, she became an Associate Professor in same department and university and in 2018, became a Professor in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Osun State University, a position she occupies to this day.
Since the start of her career in Osun State University, she has served the Department of Languages and Linguistics in various capacities. In 2011, she served as the Chairperson, Departmental Committee on Development of New Programmes at Diploma Level, she was the departmental examination officer between 2011 and 2012, Head of English Unit in the department from 2011 to 2013. From 2011 to 2014, she was the Chairperson of the department’sStudent Disciplinary Committee. Also, she was acting Head of the Department of Languages and Linguistics in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015. She was also an ad hoc member of the Committee on Development of Post Graduate Programmes Curriculum, Departmental Committee on Review of B.A Programmes and Post Graduate Programmes and the Committee on Restructuring of the Language Laboratory. At the College Level, she has also served in various capacities, some of which include serving as the Chairperson, College Students’ Disciplinary Committee, College Sub-Dean, Post Graduate Studies andActing Dean/Provost, College of Humanities and Culture. She is Staff Adviser of Joint Christian Campus Fellowship, Ikire Chapter (JCCF), Redeemed Christian Fellowship, Ikire Campus, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ikire Campus and Winners Campus Fellowship, Ikire Campus.
Her long hand of service extends also to Osun State Universities at large as she has also served and is still in service to the University at large. She has been the University’s Representative of Senate on Honorary Degree Committee and on Selection of Registrar/Bursar and Librarian. Between 2017 and 2022, she served as the editor of Uniosun Journal of Law, Development and the Humanities and occupies this position to date, she was also the Chairperson of the Students Disciplinary Committee. It is no surprise that she has bagged several awards and honours. In 2010, she was given an Award of Excellence: Outstanding Colossus in Educational Empowerment by Christ the Redeemer’s School, Onward, Osogbo. In 2017, she received an Excellent Service Award by the Faculty of Humanities Students Association (FAHSA) and the Joint Campus Christian Fellowship. Also presented to her was the Nigerian Patriot of Education Exemplary Award (NIPEEA), 2019 by Majesty Global Charity Education and the Southwest Nigeria Community Impact Award 2020 by the Southwest Nigeria Excellence Awards. She went on to win an Award of honour presented by UNIOSUN Journal of Health Sciences for outstanding roles as an editorial member in September, 2021.
A brilliant researcher and writer, she has authored and co authored books. Her book, Issues in Discourse Studies was published in 2017 by Krafts Publishers Limited.Another book she co authored, Discourse on Power and Gender in Nollywood Video Films was published by the same Publisher. She has edited and co edited books, also written chapters in books as well as contributed to journals, all totally 34.
She is a member of several professional bodies including English Scholars Association of Nigeria (ESAN), National Association of Teachers and Researchers of English as a Second Language (NATRASEL), Linguistics Association of Nigeria (LAN), International Pragmatics Association (IPrA), Nigerian Pragmatics Association (NPrA), International Society for African Philosophy and Studies (ISAPS)and Association for Professional and Academic Women (APAW).
Her academic interest has always focused on the use of language to investigate societal challenges as well as deploying the resources of language to solve varied human problems. This has deepened her interest in Discourse Studies, Critical Discourse Studies, Text Linguistics, Functional Linguistics and Pragmatics and has consistently guided her academic pursuits as well as professional accomplishments. In a bid to sharpen her academic and administrative skills, she has attended various workshops. Some of these include but not limited to: Gender, OAU/EKITI, British Counsel, UK.
When she is not soaked in academic work, she indulges in extra-curricular activities like reading, writing, meditating and listening to good music. She is happily married to Professor Balogun Oladele Abiodun and their union is blessed with wonderful children.
